Pergolas are large wooden yard structures used to add shade and decor to a yard. These structures originated in ancient Egypt and were popular during the Renaissance period in Europe. Pergola designs are vary. One example is a pathway pergola. As the name suggests, a pathway pergola is constructed to give shade to walkways in a garden or outdoor yard. Defining a pathway that traces the steps from a garden shed, carport or other area with a pergola incorporates charm into the landscape. Covering the pergola roof with aluminum or other solid roofing material changes the pathway into a convenient covered walkway. Adding screened panels to the sides of the pergola keep insects out of the pathway.
