Basement stairs will create an inviting and cozy feel to your home. Basement stairs come in all shapes and sizes from the very simple utility or access stairs to the more elaborate decorative stairs in which the basement is expanded to be a major part of the living area. Update your basement stairs with a few coats of your favorite paint color. If the stairs are wood, paint one coat of primer on and allow it to dry. Next, paint two to three coats of paint in a semi-gloss to help hide smudges. The darker the paint color, the easier it is to hide any dirt and debris you track in and out. Chocolate browns and navy blues look attractive on stairs and will hide marks and scuffs over time. For an added design, try stenciling or painting a design on the flat area behind the stairs, the area you don’t step on. Use a white or light beige color for an inviting and dramatic contrast. Another idea is to re-create a stair runner with paint. Paint the stairs white with a contrasting color on top to simulate carpet. Try a bright green or orange and you’ll have a bold design.
